2026 Hakuba Ski Travel Guide|How to Get to Hakuba from Tokyo and the Airports

For first-time visitors to Hakuba, planning your transportation in advance makes the trip much smoother. Hakuba does not have a Shinkansen station inside the village, so most travelers arrive by a combination of train, bus, shuttle, or car. Winter schedules may change each year, especially for direct buses, snow shuttles, and local shuttle services. This guide is based on 2025–2026 winter transportation information. Please check the official timetables before your trip.

Where Is Hakuba?

Hakuba Village is located in northern Nagano Prefecture, in the Japanese Alps.

From Tokyo, it usually takes around 3 to 5 hours to reach Hakuba, depending on whether you travel by Shinkansen, limited express train, bus, or car.

The main transportation points in Hakuba include:

・Hakuba Station
・Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal
・Hakuba Goryu
・Tsugaike Kogen
・Shuttle bus stops near major ski resorts

If your accommodation is not located near Hakuba Station or Happo Bus Terminal, you will also need to plan the final part of your journey after arriving in Hakuba.

Tokyo to Hakuba

From Tokyo to Hakuba, the main options are:

  1. Shinkansen + bus

  2. JR Limited Express Azusa direct to Hakuba

  3. Direct highway bus from Shinjuku to Hakuba

  4. Winter snow shuttle

  5. Self-driving

Option 1|Shinkansen + Bus

For first-time visitors to Hakuba, the most stable option is usually “Shinkansen + bus.”

Basic route:
Tokyo Station
↓ Hokuriku Shinkansen
Nagano Station
↓ ALPICO Bus
Hakuba / Hakuba Goryu / Happo Bus Terminal

The Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano takes around 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. After arriving at Nagano Station, transfer to an ALPICO bus bound for Hakuba. This route is relatively stable, easy to understand, and suitable for first-time visitors, travelers who do not want to drive in winter, or those who want to reduce the risk of traffic delays.

Please note that some winter buses from Nagano to Hakuba require reservations, while others may not. During peak season, it is best to check the schedule in advance and allow enough time for transfers.

Option 2|JR Limited Express Azusa Direct to Hakuba

If you are departing from Shinjuku, you can also take the JR Limited Express Azusa to Hakuba Station.

This is not a Shinkansen. It is a JR limited express train on conventional railway lines. Some services run directly from Shinjuku Station to Hakuba Station, without requiring a transfer at Nagano Station.

Basic route:
Shinjuku Station
↓ JR Limited Express Azusa
Hakuba Station

The journey takes around 3 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours. Fares start from around ¥8,270, depending on the booking method, seat type, and travel period. The Azusa travels toward Hakuba via the Chuo Line and Oito Line, offering views of mountain scenery along the way. It is a good choice for travelers who want fewer transfers and enjoy arriving in Hakuba by train.

Please note that direct Azusa services to Hakuba are limited. Not every Azusa train goes to Hakuba, so please confirm that your destination is Hakuba Station when booking. If your accommodation is not near Hakuba Station, you will still need to arrange shuttle service, a taxi, or local transportation after arrival.

Option 3|Direct Highway Bus from Shinjuku to Hakuba

If you prefer not to transfer at Nagano Station, you can take a direct highway bus from Shinjuku to Hakuba.

Basic route:
Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal
↓ Highway bus
Hakuba Goryu / Hakuba Station / Hakuba Happo / Tsugaike Kogen

This option is suitable for travelers departing from central Tokyo who want fewer transfers. Once you board the bus, you can go all the way to Hakuba, which is convenient if you are carrying ski gear or large luggage.

Compared with the Shinkansen + bus, the direct highway bus from Shinjuku is often easier to manage in terms of budget. However, the travel time is longer and can be affected by road conditions, traffic, and weather. Please check the seasonal timetable before your trip.

Option 4|Winter Snow Shuttle

In winter, some snow shuttle operators also provide services from central Tokyo, airports, or Nagano Station to Hakuba.

The advantage of these services is that they usually require fewer transfers, making them convenient for travelers with ski gear or large luggage. However, operating periods, schedules, and luggage rules may change every year, and seats can fill up quickly during peak season.

If you are arriving from overseas and heading directly to Hakuba, a snow shuttle may be worth considering. However, if your flight arrives late, or if you are concerned about immigration and baggage claim taking longer than expected, it may be better to stay one night in Tokyo and travel to Hakuba the next day.

Option 5|Self-Driving to Hakuba

Self-driving is the most flexible option and is also common for winter travel in Hakuba.

From Tokyo, driving to Hakuba takes around 4 hours, depending on your starting point, road conditions, and weather. If your accommodation is not near a station or major bus route, having a car can make the whole trip much easier.

For winter driving, please keep the following in mind:
・Studless winter tires are required
・4WD is strongly recommended
・Check highway and mountain road snow conditions before departure
・Confirm that your accommodation has parking

When renting a car, it is also a good idea to check:
・Whether winter tires require an additional fee
・Whether the car has enough space for luggage
・Whether a roof rack can be added
・What the insurance covers

If no one in your group has experience driving on snowy roads, we do not recommend choosing self-driving for your first Hakuba trip. In that case, consider Shinkansen + bus first, then use shuttle buses, taxis, or accommodation pick-up after arriving in Hakuba.

Narita / Haneda Airport to Hakuba

If you are arriving in Japan from overseas, you will usually enter through Narita Airport or Haneda Airport.

Neither airport has a direct train to Hakuba. The common route is to travel first to central Tokyo or Nagano, then transfer to Shinkansen, bus, or another transportation option to reach Hakuba.

The main options are:

  1. Airport → Tokyo / Nagano → Hakuba

  2. Direct airport bus / snow shuttle to Hakuba

  3. Rental car from the airport

Narita Airport is farther from Hakuba, so travel time is usually longer than from Haneda.

The most stable route is to first travel from the airport to central Tokyo, then take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano Station, and finally transfer to a bus bound for Hakuba.

Common route:
Narita Airport / Haneda Airport
↓ Central Tokyo
Tokyo Station
↓ Hokuriku Shinkansen
Nagano Station
↓ Bus
Hakuba

If the schedule works well, you can also look for direct airport buses or snow shuttles to Hakuba. These services are convenient for travelers with ski gear or large luggage because they reduce the number of transfers.

However, direct airport buses and snow shuttles to Hakuba are often seasonal winter services. Operating periods, schedules, and booking methods may change every year. During summer or outside the snow season, official pages may show that the service is not operating or that the latest winter schedule has not yet been announced. Please confirm whether there are actual services for your travel dates before arranging your flight arrival time and onward transportation.

If you arrive in Japan late in the day, we recommend staying one night in Tokyo or Nagano and traveling to Hakuba the next day. Moving at night in winter with large luggage and ski gear can be tiring.

Getting to Hakuba from Other Areas

Besides Tokyo and the airports, many travelers also come to Hakuba from Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Matsumoto, or other ski areas.

Osaka / Kyoto to Hakuba

From the Kansai area, you can consider:
・Highway bus
・Shinkansen + bus

Highway buses usually involve fewer transfers and are easier to understand. If you prefer a more comfortable journey, you can also combine Shinkansen and limited express trains, although the route will be more complex.

Winter direct buses from Osaka or Kyoto to Hakuba may change their operating dates and schedules every year. Please check the seasonal information before your trip.

Nagoya to Hakuba

From Nagoya, a common route is to take the JR Limited Express Shinano to Nagano, then transfer to a bus bound for Hakuba.

This route is suitable for travelers arriving through Chubu Centrair International Airport, staying in Nagoya first, or those who prefer not to return to Tokyo before heading to Hakuba.

Matsumoto to Hakuba

Matsumoto is closer to Hakuba than Tokyo and works well if you want to include Matsumoto Castle, Azumino, or central Nagano in your itinerary.

From Matsumoto to Hakuba, you can choose:
・JR Oito Line
・Bus

Transportation options to Hakuba from different areas may change each winter depending on bus operations. Before the snow season begins, it is best to check the websites of each bus company before finalizing your plans.

Transportation within Hakuba Village

After arriving in Hakuba, the next question is how to move between ski resorts, restaurants, and your accommodation each day.
Hakuba Village does not have the kind of train network you find in large cities. In winter, the main local transportation options include:
・Hakuba Valley Shuttle Bus
・Free shuttle buses operated by each ski resort
・Uber/taxi
・Hakuba Night Demand Taxi
・Rental car / self-driving
・Accommodation pick-up

Hakuba Valley Shuttle Bus

In winter, the Hakuba Valley Shuttle Bus connects several major ski resorts within the valley.

Travelers with a Hakuba Valley All-Mountain Season Pass can usually ride for free. Travelers without a pass may need to purchase a single-ride ticket. Please check the official information for the latest fares and boarding rules. The shuttle bus is suitable for travelers who are not driving, want to visit different ski resorts, and are staying near a shuttle stop.

Please note that shuttle buses mainly operate during the day. Nighttime transportation usually needs to be arranged separately.

Hakuba Valley Shuttle Bus

Free Shuttle Buses by Ski Resort

Different ski resorts also operate their own free shuttle buses.

For example, Hakuba47 and Hakuba Goryu usually provide winter shuttle services around the resort area, including village shuttles, routes toward Omachi Onsen, and connections between Goryu, Iimori, and Hakuba47.

If you mainly plan to ski at Goryu / 47, staying in the Goryu area can make your daily transportation much easier.

Uber / Taxi

Since the 2024/25 winter season, taxi-hailing through the Uber App has become available in parts of Hakuba Village. Travelers may be able to use Uber in some areas, such as around Hakuba Happo.

In addition to Uber, the service desks at ski resorts can usually provide taxi-related information. If you have difficulty with the language, you can also ask the staff for assistance.

However, the number of available taxis in Hakuba during winter is still limited. Especially during heavy snow, at night, during peak season, or around ski resort pick-up and drop-off times, you may experience longer waiting times, difficulty locating the driver, or situations where it is not possible to get a ride smoothly. GPS accuracy, snow-covered roads, and unclear pick-up or drop-off points can also affect the process.

Uber and taxis can be useful temporary transportation options, but we do not recommend relying on “we’ll just call a taxi later” as your only transportation plan.

If you have a restaurant reservation, check-out schedule, or need to arrive at the station on time, it is better to prepare a transportation backup in advance. During the peak winter season, confirming your transportation ahead of time will make your trip much more relaxed.

Hakuba Night Demand Taxi

On winter nights, Hakuba Night Demand Taxi is also available in the village. It is a reservation-based shared nighttime transportation service, somewhere between a shuttle bus and a taxi. Reservations are usually made through a dedicated app, with pick-up and drop-off at designated stops.

Compared with regular taxis, Night Demand Taxi is usually more affordable. It is useful for going to restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores, or returning from main areas to somewhere near your accommodation. For travelers who are not driving, it is one of the options worth checking for nighttime transportation in Hakuba.

Please note that it is not the same as a regular door-to-door taxi. Pick-up and drop-off points are usually limited to designated stops, and schedules and operating periods may change by season. Before using it, we recommend downloading the app and checking the available areas, stop locations, payment methods, and seasonal operating hours.

Local Car Rental in Hakuba

If you do not want to drive all the way from Tokyo or another city to Hakuba, you can first arrive in Nagano or Hakuba by Shinkansen, limited express train, or bus, then rent a car locally.

This can reduce the stress of long-distance driving while still giving you freedom of movement after arriving in Hakuba. It is a balanced option for travelers who want to visit multiple ski resorts, are staying somewhere not close to a main bus stop, or do not want to rely completely on shuttle bus schedules in the evening.

Even when driving only within Hakuba Village, winter roads may still be snowy or icy. If you are not used to driving in snow, we recommend traveling mainly during the day and avoiding driving during heavy snow or at night.

Paw Pow Notes|Our Recommendation

For first-time visitors to Hakuba, the most stable route is:

Tokyo Station → Nagano Station → Hakuba

In other words, Shinkansen + bus. The travel time is relatively stable, and the transfers are easy to understand.

If you are staying near Shinjuku and prefer not to transfer, you can consider the JR Limited Express Azusa direct to Hakuba Station. It is a comfortable railway journey, but direct services to Hakuba are limited, so we recommend booking in advance.

If you want to reduce costs or avoid carrying luggage between stations, the direct highway bus from Shinjuku to Hakuba is also an option. However, winter weather and road conditions may cause delays, so it is best to allow extra time.

If you are arriving from Narita or Haneda, you may be able to enter Hakuba on the same day if your flight arrives early. If you arrive late, we recommend staying one night in Tokyo or Nagano and traveling to Hakuba the next day.

How to Get to Paw Pow Zone

Paw Pow Zone is located at the foot of Hakuba Goryu Snow Resort, about a 5-minute walk from Goryu Parking Lot 7.

If you do not want to carry snowboards, skis, or large luggage around, you can also send your luggage to Paw Pow Zone in advance. Let your hands take a small holiday first.

If you want a trip with more freedom and your own rhythm, Paw Pow Zone also offers spacious free parking for up to 4 cars. For families, ski groups, or travelers who want to explore different areas of Hakuba, traveling by car is the most convenient option.
